Submission

  • Via Moodle Assignment Submission.
  • Turnitin will be used for similarity checking of all submissions.
  • Submissions that do not meet the basic citing and referencing requirements will be returned and given 24 hours for re-submission, with a 10% (2 mark) deduction.
  • Resubmissions that still do not meet the basic citing and referencing requirements will receive an N grade.

Assessment Criteria

  • Ability to clearly describe in your own words the article’s content and context, and identify the data issues/challenges.
  • Ability to identify the key arguments related to data and explain the underpinning evidence.
  • Ability to critically evaluate the arguments and evidence, using an ethical technological design framework.
  • Critical writing skills including appropriate citation and referencing of your sources.
  • Ability to draw succinct conclusions with supporting evidence.

The marking rubric is available on the Moodle site for the unit.

Late Penalties

  • 10% (2 mark) deduction per calendar day for up to one week
  • Submissions more than 7 calendar days after the due date will receive a mark of zero (0) and no assessment feedback will be provided.

INSTRUCTIONS

Your submission should consider the assessment criteria and use the following guide as prompts when reading the article:

A.Context & content description: What is the article about? Who are the direct and indirect stakeholders in the data/technology discussed? Why is the article relevant to Data in Society more broadly? Summarise the key argument(s) in your own words.

B.Critical explanation: Identify the particular data and technological challenges reflected through the key arguments? What evidence (e.g. academic research, government report,company statement, etc.) is referred to, described, and/or otherwise used to support the key argument(s)?

C.Analysis: Map the key data/technology challenges of the given article against the principles of Beard & Longstaff’s (B & L) Ethical Design Framework. Briefly discuss whether or not the evidence/s present (for the key data/technology challenges) are aligned with the Beard & Longstaff principles.

D.Synthesis: Which principle(s) of Beard & Longstaff’s Ethical Design Framework are most relevant to the issues discussed in this article? How does this framework help to evaluate the article’s key data challenges?

E.Conclusion: Do you agree or disagree with the key data/technology challenges? Provide any supporting evidence to justify your agreement or disagreement. Does the B& L Ethical Design Framework help you in drawing your conclusion?
