Course Duration:

35 hours per week for two weeks (70 hours of practicum)

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this module students will have:

  • Monitored, recorded, and updated children’s physical and emotional health status using appropriate methods
  • Complied with child protection responsibilities as outlined in legislation, regulations, protocols, and court orders
  • Observed, monitored, and recorded a child’s social, emotional,cognitive, physical, communicative, and cultural development
  • Observed, monitored, and recorded a child’s developmental progress in a non-judgemental and objective way
  • Maintained confidentiality in all verbal and written communication with,and about, families in keeping with legislative, professional and organizational requirements
  • Established an emotionally safe and nurturing climate
  • Established genuine and trusting relationships with children and others
  • Shared information about each child with other caregivers using discretion and respect
  • Responded positively to children’s efforts to learn, grow and acquire new skills

Course

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this module students will have:

  • Reflected on and evaluated professional practice on an on-going basis through the use of journal entries and the student self-evaluation booklet
  • Shared personal/professional development experiences with colleagues in an open and respectful manner
  • Contributed to an effective team to ensure the delivery of quality child care services
  • Worked within the expectations and guidelines established in job descriptions, policies, procedures, and codes of conduct

Attendance

Expectations:

Students are required attend their practicum daily and to log in regularly and complete each week’s course material. There are activities and assignments due throughout the placement. Student progress is tracked by the completion of these activities and attendance records from the host site; failure to complete them will result in a marked absence.

Dress

Expectations:

Students are expected to dress appropriately for practical placement sessions,in accordance with the dress code policy.

The college is committed to ensuring that students have the full range of knowledge and skills required for full participation in all aspects of their lives,including skills enabling them to be life-long learners. To ensure graduates have this preparation, such generic skills as literacy and numeric, computer,interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills will be embedded in all courses
