Student instructions

Introduction

You are an advisor for the Ministry of Primary Industries Fisheries office. You have been asked to prepare a report about the possible impact of rising CO2 levels on New Zealand’s seafood industries. Write a report that demonstrates your understanding of the chemical processes involved when CO2 dissolves in seawater and the environmental issues associated with these processes.

You will be assessed on the comprehensiveness of your report and on your evaluation of the impact of, and issues that have arisen from, chemical processes.

You should aim to spend around 5 hours individually to complete this task.

Task

Write a report that demonstrates an understanding of the processes involved in ocean acidification and the environmental issues involved with the chemical processes.

See Resource A for links to information that you will need to process and interpret.

You will be assessed on how well your report demonstrates your understanding of the chemical processes involved in ocean acidification and the consequential environmental effects.

In your report:

  • describe the chemical processes involved, including appropriate chemical equations
  • explain the action of the carbonate/hydrogen carbonate buffer
  • identify and explain how the chemical processes are linked to the survival of marine organisms
  • compare and contrast the conditions that exist at the surface of the ocean with those at depth, describe the circumstances that would cause mixing of surface and deep waters, and the environmental consequences of such mixing.
  • briefly summarise the effect on New Zealand’s seafood industry of rising CO2 levels and suggest what the Government could do in response.Resource A

Introduction

You are a soil research scientist working on the development of products that reduce the amount of nitrous oxide (N2O) released from pastures. You are applying to an environmental charitable trust for funding to continue your research. Write a report that demonstrates understanding of the processes involved in the greenhouse effect, nitrous oxide emissions and their environmental consequences.

You will be assessed on the comprehensiveness of your report and on your evaluation of the impact of, and issues that have arisen from, chemical processes.

You should aim to spend around 5 hours individually to complete this task.

You will be assessed on how well your report demonstrates your understanding of the chemical processes involved in the greenhouse effect and nitrous oxide emissions and the consequential environmental effects.

In your report:

  • describe the chemical processes involved in the greenhouse effect and explain how these contribute to global warming
  • elaborate by discussing the properties of greenhouse gases and their different global warming potentials
  • identify and explain the processes that release nitrous oxide into the atmosphere
  • compare and contrast the environmental factors in New Zealand and other countries with their

greenhouse gas profiles

  • summarise the benefits to New Zealand of reducing nitrous oxide emissions.Resource A
