Case Study: Reading Community Learning Centre

In the lectures and in your reading we have explored different types of migration across the world and throughout history. For this assignment you will need to draw from some of this reading in order to select one of the following three case study topics and evaluate the relevance of using linguistic ethnography to investigate language and migration in this context:

  1. Education and RCLC

How can linguistic ethnography be used to explore the role that language learning plays in the charity’s work? How can the learning trajectories of learners be investigated as well as the role of language within these trajectories and those of learners’ families? You should refer to data collection methods and data analysis methods for using a linguistic ethnographic approach.

  1. Employment and RCLC

How can linguistic ethnography be used to explore the role of employment in the activities that RCLC provides its learners? What kinds of work did the clients do before they migrated to the UK (include work in the house), what type of work do they do now or aim to do in the future, and how can linguistic ethnography help us understand the role of work in their lives? What sort of barriers have they faced and what role does language play in opening up employment opportunities as well as closing down opportunities for the clients? You should refer to data collection methods and data analysis methods for using a linguistic ethnographic approach.

  1. Well-being and RCLC

How can linguistic ethnography be used to explore issues related to loneliness and isolation in RCLC clients’ lives and the lives of their families? How does the charity support isolated/vulnerable women/men, what activities does it provide, what role do all the languages that the learners use play in enhancing the clients’ resilience, and how can linguistic ethnography help us investigate these issues? You should refer to data collection methods and data analysis methods for using a linguistic ethnographic approach.

General information

You will need to explain the countries of origin that RCLC’s learners represent (e.g. refugees from Syria or economic migrants from Bangladesh) and provide some background information about who these migrants are (please use pseudonyms rather than real names)

You will also need to explain what kind of migration this is (e.g. forced migration, voluntary migration) and link this to the types of migration we have studied on the module by referring to ONE theory of migration (e.g. globalization, transnationalism).

Please email your choice of case study to Tony by the end of Week 9 (or before) so he can agree the case study is suitable.

Write a 2,500 word case study that will be provided to RCLC dividing your report into the following five sections:

  1. Introduction: Brief overview of what you will do in the case study (approx. 250 words)
  2. Background: Information which relates to the specific group of migrants (e.g. refugees from Syria, economic migrants within the EU) and how RCLC works with this group. Refer to the relevant forms of migration that we have explored in this module (e.g. colonialism; voluntary economic migration; forced migration and displacement) to briefly explain the link between this group and the reasons people migrate (approx. 500 words)
  3. Key concepts: Explain how ONE key concept relevant to your chosen research question enables you to understand the relationship between language and migration in the context of your case study i.e. for well-being you will need to discuss resilience; for education you will need to discuss language of instruction (EAL/ESOL); and for employment you will need to discuss the standard language myth(approx. 1000 words)
  4. Recommendation: A short section where you identify ONE recommendation for RCLC or RRSG which has emerged from your case study that the charity was previously unaware of. (approx. 500 words)
  5. Conclusion: Brief summary and your main findings. (approx. 250 words)

For this task, you should make reference to relevant literature in Section 3 and 4 where you discuss the key concepts for your essay.

Marking criteria

  2. Demonstrate understanding of the links between the key concepts and discourses about migration

  5. Quality of argument at the macro-level of the essay i.e. coherence of ideas. Articulation of arguments effectively in writing and logical information flow.
  6. Presentation, especially correctness of referencing, and quality of academic writing
