INTRODUCTION

The Innovation Report will be the core in-semester assignment for INFO5992. In it, you will be investigating some emerging technologies and their commercial environment, applying the ideas and frameworks taught in this unit.

You will be selecting 1 emerging technology, 1 industry, and 2 companies within this same industry. The overarching goal for your analyses of these is to characterise the way innovation is being conducted, through your research into these companies and what they are doing with this emerging technology. You will also be examining the surrounding innovation context these companies are operating within.

STRUCTURE

Your report must use the following sections:

  • Section 1: Introduction

o Introduce your technology, industry, and companies.

o State what your report will cover (i.e., introduce each section)

  • Section 2: Technology & Industry

o Define and describe your selected technology and industry

o Assess the current and (expected) future development of the selected technology

o Discuss how the technology is applied to your selected industry

  • Section 3: Innovation Context

o Discuss the current and potential future impact of the selected technology to Australia as a country

o Discuss the current and potential future role of the Australian government in the development and commercialisation of the selected technology

o Discuss any role of universities in the development and commercialisation of the selected technology

  • Section 4: Diffusion of Innovation

o Evaluate the rate of adoption of the selected technology

o Evaluate in which stage the selected technology lies in the Technology Adoption Lifecycle Model

o Identify any barriers to adoption that currently exist

  • Section 5: Dominant Design

o Define and describe a product category which is enabled by your selected technology

o Evaluate whether there is a dominant design for the product category.

▪If there is a dominant design, describe the architecture which has been adopted and another architecture which was not adopted.

▪ If there is no dominant design, describe at least two architectures that are part of the design competition.

o Apply the Technology Cycle for the product category, including its key aspects and the variation and selection process of the design competition.

  • Section 6: Business Model Canvaso Apply the nine building blocks of the Business Model Canvas to both of your selected companies.

o Refer to the lecture slides for the nine building blocks and what you should focus on applying for each building block.

o Your work must be presented in the standard Business Model Canvas format provided.

  • Section 7: Conclusion

o Conclude your report by recapping the overall findings from each section.

  • Section 8: References

Do not include any additional appendices etc. as these will not be considered during marking.

FORMAT, WORD LIMIT, REFERENCING

  • Your report must be

o In PDF format

o A4 page size (portrait except for Section 6)

o single spaced

o minimum font size 10

o all text must be selectable(certain obscure PDF generation methods can fail to allow this – Turnitin will not work, and your submission will not be marked)

o Any method of obtaining a PDF that meets the above is fine – Word, Pages, LaTeX, etc.

o Do not include any cover sheet

  • You must use easily visible headings for each section (and are encouraged to create your own subsections with sub-headings wherever appropriate).
  • A table of contents covering each of these headings and sub-headings is required.
  • The word limit for your report is 3000 words

o This word limit includes all sections except Section 6: Business Canvas, and Section 8:

References (captions are included)

o Your Business Canvas section is limited to 2 pages – 1 per company. Note the minimum size 10 font and A4 page rules still apply (landscape is for this section)

o Include a word count statement at the end of your report (bottom of the final page after References)

  • You should use the IEEE referencing format. See

https://libguides.library.usyd.edu.au/c.php?g=508212&p=3476486

  • The use of a reference manager is strongly recommended – Mendeley, Zotero, EndNote, etc.
  • However, you are responsible for the correctness of your referencing and cannot blame software for any mistakes – check the output they give you is correct.
  • All references must be in English and publicly available.
  • All tables, charts, images, etc. must be captioned with a brief description and reference. If you created the figure, you should indicate this, e.g., “Created by fName lName for INFO5992”. Do not include figures that you do not discuss in your body text.
  • Your references should be of an appropriate quality – do not use anonymous blogs or other sources whose reliability may not be established.
  • See https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/12076 for more support regarding academic writing and evidenceINDUSTRIES & COMPANIES Select a grouping from the Global Industry Classification Standard:

https://www.msci.com/our-solutions/indexes/gics

You are free to select a Sector, Industry Group, Industry, or Sub-Industry depending on how specific you would like to get. This is a balance between how readily available information is available to you, and what sort of scope you would like to limit your discussion to.

Your companies are yours to select – though you will be significantly limited as the number of companies publicly adopting these emerging technologies will be small. You should ensure that you can obtain sufficient information about the companies you select and their publicly disclosed use of your selected technology.

TECHNOLOGIES

You must select a technology from the following list:

  • Metaverse
  • Causal AI
  • Digital Twin of a Customer
  • Computational Storage
  • Platform Engineering
  • Industry Cloud Platforms
  • Internal Talent Marketplace
  • Machine Learning Code Generation

SUBMISSION

Your report must be submitted in PDF form to Canvas through the appropriate assignment submission link. All due dates have a due time of 23:59 Sydney time. Be careful here as Sydney moves to daylight saving time on 02OCT, moving one hour forwards. There are two submissions possible:

  • Draft: Due date 18SEP (end of week 7). This is an optional submission if you would like early feedback from your marker on your current work. There are no marks associated with this submission and there is no direct penalty for not submitting it, but it is highly recommended that you do so. At an absolute minimum to avoid the worst mistakes usually seen in final submissions, you should submit

o Your identified technology, industry, and companies

o A list of references you intend to use

  • Full submission: Due date 16OCT (end of week 10). This is the full submission that will be marked.
